Why Establishing Trust With Your Dog is One of the Most Important Parts of Obedience Training
Your dog needs to feel that he is safe with you and wanted at all times. No matter what his behavior, you must always be kind to your dog. Be friendly and make sure that you smile.
Your dog does not know when he has misbehaved. He simply understands that you are angry. He can sense it. He does not know why. Reprimanding a dog after he has misbehaved is unkind to your pet. The key is preventing or training your dog from getting into a harmful or negative situation that may upset you in the first place. Give him the outlets he needs to use his energy in a positive way. Make sure he gets plenty of exercise. Play with him regularly at the same time for the same length of time each day or every other day. Do not leave things out where he is able to get into trouble. Learn to put your possessions away.
Consistency is a major factor in training. Always be predictable with your commands. Do not confuse your pet by allowing him to be one way with you; whereas the same behavior with someone else may be unacceptable. Eagerly putting his paws on your chest in greeting may be acceptable for you but when he tries this on old Aunt Margaret and she falls over, he gets into trouble. This does not mean that your dog may never be allowed to greet you in this manner but he needs to learn that he may only do so when you indicate that he may. Also, anyone that lives with him must be consistent in what behavior they will accept.
Remove “no” from your vocabulary when speaking to your dog, except in an emergency situation. Use positive commands. State what you want him to do, not what you do not want him to do.
Dogs are pack animals. You need to establish yourself as the leader. Again, this needs to be done in a positive manner. Teaching your dog the “sit” and “down” positions and training him to assume these positions on demand put you in the driver’s seat. Once he is able to perform these commands consistently, you will be the leader of his pack.
Providing your dog with consistent, predictable, and positive interactions will establish the trust necessary for him to be happy and secure. Be happy with him and he will be happy with you.
