How to Leash Train a Puppy

How to leash train a puppy the right way, can be a challenge to some pet owners. Leash training puppies should be fun, and enjoyable. Remember that your puppy does not understand what a collar, or a leash is. They are foreign objects to your puppy. So don’t have high expectations of your puppy.

Leash training a puppy in some cases takes longer then others. Some puppies pick up on leash training right away. While other puppies think it’s a fun game. This can make puppy owners very frustrated. Try to keep in mind that a puppy is a baby to them everything is a game.

When leash training a puppy, introduce the collar first. Keep the collar on inside so the puppy can get use to it. After a while your puppy will forget it has a collar on. Next introduce the leash. This can be tough, most puppies think a leash is just another chew toy. Expect your puppy to want to chew on the long leash. To prevent chewing on the leash use puppy training treats. When the puppy has the leash on and stays calm, reward your puppy with a treat.

Leash training takes practice. The more you practice leash training with your puppy. The more your puppy will be exposed to the routine. Your puppy in time will realize that when he sees the leash it’s time for exercise. When using treats along with the leash your puppy will understand it is a positive reward. You will not always need the treats. Just until your puppy is leash trained.

When leash training your puppy start with small increments of time. Just 20 minutes once, or twice a day will be perfect at first. Do not give your puppy to much lead on the leash. Your puppy should be walking by your side. Not in front of you or behind you. If your puppy pulls you on a leash, you should stop. Stop and don’t move, your puppy will realize that pulling will get him no where. If the puppy keeps pulling turn, and walk in the opposite direction, this will teach your puppy to follow your lead. Practice makes perfect so be consistent. Pulling on a leash can cause your puppy lots of pain and serious injury. Find a harness or a gentle leader while leash training a puppy.

Leash training a puppy starts the moment the leash is on your puppy. You must have your puppy sitting patiently before you open the door. Reward your puppy with a treat when he sits patiently. When you open the door, you must walk out the door first. This is so important do not skip this step. If you ignore this step, and your puppy walks through the door first. You just made it clear to your puppy that he is leading you on the walk. You are the leader and must take leadership on your walks or your puppy will be walking you.

Leash training a puppy should also consist of commands. So before you cross a street, even if there are no cars driving by. Ask your puppy to sit before crossing. Be consistent with this. As puppies grow into adult dogs their size and strength can dominate use. We need to have control. Teaching your puppy to sit before crossing the street will help give you control. You don’t want your large dog to pull you across a busy street one day. It could injure you, your dog, and others. So gain control with using simple commands while leash training your puppy.

Remember while leash training your puppy be patient. Your puppy is not perfect. So don’t expect every walk to be perfect. When your puppy is distracted on a leash redirect your puppy. Practice, consistency, and patients is everything when leash training your puppy.

How To Train A Puppy or Dog

Puppy training begins the moment you bring your puppy home. Most dog owners don’t realize how important this is. Puppies are very smart, and training them while they are small is the best way to have a obedient dog.

Don’t let your puppy sleep in your bed. Puppy training should consist of some rules. Puppies should sleep in a crate or on their own bed. When you let a puppy in your bed to them you are their equal. If your puppy thinks you are equals how will you train your puppy?

While puppy training don’t become over excited around your puppy. This will cause your puppy to jump up on you, and your guests. This might seem cute when your puppy is small. But it wont when they grow up. Puppies also will pee when excited. Your puppy should be trained to sit before getting your attention. So when you and your family come home don’t greet your puppy with to much excitement.

Feed your puppy twice a day. Once in morning and once at night. Your puppy should not be allowed to eat before the rest of the family. You eating first establishes leadership in your puppies eyes. When training your puppy, establishing a routine is important.

How to train a puppy to go potty outside is tough. Puppies have small bladders, and very little bladder control. Make sure you put your puppy outside every 20 minutes to use the potty. This will help your puppy understand where it is okay to potty. Soon your puppy will let you know by standing at the door when it needs to use the potty.

How to train a puppy is hard work. Everyone in the house needs to be consistent. If this routine is consistent training your puppy will be much easier. Your puppy will understand its role in it’s new pack. Your puppy will love and respect your commands.

Helpful Puppy Training Tips

Puppies try to jump at anything and everything during their first year of life. It is worth knowing that this behavior will remain the same when the puppy grows into am adult dog. If you want your dog to keep on jumping on guests, then it is fine to let the puppy jump at you on every occasion. Better way is to reward the puppy and punish for desired behavior. When the puppy is jumping at you, neglect this behavior. Make the puppy sit on the floor and offer a reward. Over a period of time puppy will realize the benefit of sitting in front of you and therefore will forget the tendency of jumping at people. This will be to your great advantage when the puppy grows and becomes a sort of serious dog.

Punishment to the puppy should not be treated as punishment, but correction in behavior. It is important to correct puppy’s behavior at the time of any offence committed by the puppy. Never correct him after a time gap. Fir example, if you don’t want your puppy to start barking the moment doorbell rings, correct him immediately. If you try to correct him after the guests are gone, he may get confused. Once this unwanted behavior is corrected, never forget to reward the puppy for the correct behavior. This reward may not necessarily in the form of food only. You may show your happiness over the behavior and your dog is intelligent enough to know your good mood.

Get a good number of toys for your puppy to chew. Never allow him to bite or chew your hand. If the puppy bites your hand, make a huge noise to make puppy understand his mistake. Don’t try to punish the puppy for this behavior. Walk away from the place and don’t let him near you for some time. Puppy will understand this clearly and never try to repeat that mistake. Handful of chewable toys will do this trick easily.

Try not to leave the puppies unattended in a room. Puppies because of their natural tendency of chewing, will mess up with valuable articles in the room. If you scold him for this, he may not understand the reasons of your behavior. Leave it there itself, and then never ever leave him unattended.

Puppies may feel sick when taken on a long drive. Start training your puppy in the car for shorter distances first and then keep on increasing the trip time and miles. Puppy will get adjusted to long hours in the car.

Dog Behavior Issues

I know from experience that even the best dogs are not always well behaved and do have behavior issues. Just imagine trying to deal with two English Mastiffs, and a little Yorkie Poo. They are next to impossible to deal with when they are all together which is quite often. However, you can learn the tips that I did and how I found out how to control my dogs better than I have ever managed to before! Some of the things I am going to tell you about is training, positive reinforcement, and consulting with your vet to rule out possible health issues.

One of the first things that I had to do to help me out with my dogs was find a dog training course. My husband was not to keen on the idea, but after they were obedience trained he was quite happy because they were no longer dragging him thru the backyard. So that little training helped out tremendously. I feel that training can help dogs of any age or size. They can even help with dog behavior issues.

The next thing that I did to help address my dogs behavior issues were to start with positive reinforcement. I know that is a simple psychological issue to deal with the issues, but it does work quite well. I found that when they misbehave if I ignore them and not show any affection of any sort towards the dog it manages to change their attitude quite quickly. Most dogs do love having attention given to them and without that attention then they typically will correct the bad behavior quickly. However, you must remember that when the dog does something good you have to give them affection right away. I usually give a pat on the chest which according to classes that I have went to makes them feel proud of what they did. I have used treats as a reward at certain times mainly when training them to come after I let them off of the leash.

While those solutions typically work for dealing with your dogs behavior you might have to consult with your vet to help address the issues. I have had to do that for my cat even because her behavior is so terrible. Sometimes as is the case with my cat he prescribed medication for her. That could be what your dog needs to correct any behavior issues that keep recurring. Remember that your sometimes your dogs behavior could be caused by health issues so be sure to check with your vet before trying anything else.

So if your dog is having behavior issues you can try a variety of things. Some of those things include consulting with your vet about possible health issues, positive reinforcement, and dog training. A combination of all those things maybe required which is what I had to do with my dogs. Mainly the training and positive reinforcement which seemed to help out the best since they were only puppies, but in your older dogs it maybe that they are experiencing health issues so you do have to take into account the age of your dog before taking any steps to correct the behavior

Aggressive Dog Behavior ? Training For The Dog And The Owner

Reducing aggressive dog behavior is very important for the dog and the owner. The problem which started as harmless aggression can turn into severely dangerous aggression. If the keeper allows aggressive dog behavior, it makes the dog to believe that he can get away with any kind of behavior, thus makes the situation worse and out of control. There are so many different ways in which the owner understands the Aggressive dog behavior. Some of the ways to identify this aggression are biting, growling, jumping on people, being stubborn and disobedient etc.

Biting is really worst habit, if your dog continuously bites other animals and people and if he even bits you then it is the time to send your dog to “obedient school for dogs” immediately. This is just not the behavior you want to continue with. Sometimes owner starts everything from the scratch to reduce aggressive dog behavior, and need to follow step by step procedures which can makes his dog “a professionally trained dog”. The owner while training his dog must remain consistent with the training; this will help the dog to know what owner expects from him.

There is another option in correcting aggressive dog behavior is that the owner can also hire trainer which is normally not very expensive, but the trainer will only train the dog, however to overcome the aggressive dog behavior there are a lot of different changes that the owner need to do, if he wants to communicate properly with his dog. Some people think that punishing a dog is a good way of training the pet, but they don’t know that punishing the dog can make the dog more fearful and anxious which could lead him to bite someone. Hitting is strictly prohibited because it can make more aggressive dog behavior. If your dog has started to show good behavior now it’s the time to appraise him for his actions. Canines are the perfect example; they become so pleased by their owner’s appreciation which helps them to reduce their aggression. Dog owner just need to remember that training the aggressive dog is very long and tiresome process and he needs to work with patience.

Train Your Puppy Easily. He’ll Grow Up to be a Wonderful Companion

A wise trainer once said” if you want to be successful training dogs, you must think like a dog, but you must teach the dog to think like a human”. The same holds true with puppies. Puppies are baby dogs, but they differ from grown dogs just as children differ from grown ups.

Unlike grown dogs, their teaching periods must be kept brief, The trainer must always be aware of the puppy mentality and gear his or her efforts to capitalizing on the shorter attention span of the pup.

Before your puppy can be trained successfully, he needs consistency established in his daily routine to enhance his training ability and to have a healthy life. Set a schedule for his daily feeding, grooming , playing, and schooling activities.

Make sure your pup is fed at the same times everyday. Once you have found a brand of puppy food that agrees with him, stick to the same brand. While choosing a brand of pet food, look for one that has rich sources of protein like chicken, and meat protein.

Do not feed your puppy scraps from the table. This creates bad habits and can also be dangerous to a pup’s digestive system

Grooming has multiple benefits for your pup – it keeps his skin and fur clean, and serves as a bonding experience for you and your pup. Brush your pup’s coat everyday. Be gentle with your brushing, Take care not to hurt or irritate the skin. Look for and remove ticks, and stickers ,and debris from your pup’s coat.

Establish a regular playtime to be conducted daily. Exercise helps puppies release energy so they can better concentrate when being trained. Exercise keeps them healthy.

Establishing a routine play time helps them learn the difference between playtime and serious time.

Now establish a daily training time for your pup. This will be his school time and it must be maintained as serious time. Don’t set school time adjacent to play time.
Make sure your pup isn’t hungry or thirsty during school time so that he’s not distracted.

When you have established consistency in each of the puppy’s activities, you’ve laid the foundation for his training.

Remember, consistency is the very essence of puppy training.

Hunting Dogs: Essential Training Equipment and Information

Producing a “finished” hunting dog, one that will perform the tasks of pointing out game or retrieving game, is not a simple matter. In some cases, it can take several hunting seasons and specialized training equipment to achieve the desired results.

It would be ludicrous to begin training a dog to perform hunting skills without first teaching it basic obedience. Your dog must be able to sit, stay, remain quite and come on demand before moving into the more complex areas of the hunt. The success of the hunt, as well as the safety of the dog and its handler, is directly correlated to the dog’s performance and self control. For example, an unruly dog that barks at incoming geese will not only spoil the hunt, but will not be invited back again. Further, a dog that bolts out of a blind too quickly can jeopardize a shot and even cause a shooting accident. Control is most essential.

When the hunter is ready to begin training his dog for the hunt, there is a variety of equipment that will prove valuable. Probably the first and most essential item is a piece of 3/8-inch polypropylene rope of about 30 feet in length. The rope allows the handler to maintain control of his dog during exercises and eliminates the chance of having to chase the dog and correct him for straying.

Most dogs have a natural fear of loud noises, especially gunfire. Therefore, the trainer will have to involve a training pistol or firearm in his training program. A handgun is preferable; a shotgun is too large and difficult to handle while holding the lead line and juggling other training devices. When training the retriever, training “bumpers” or dummies are utilized to teach the dog to fetch. These aides come in various colors and sizes. White bumpers are generally used for “marking” drills where the dog is being taught to retrieve by sight and colored bumpers are used for “running blinds” where the dog is sent blindly into an area to retrieve a downed bird that fell out of sight.

The retriever should be trained to respond to the sound of a whistle. The voice of the dog’s handler will not always be loud enough or distinct enough to alert the dog to give up the search and return to the handler’s side. Some of the more elaborate whistles come with built-in megaphones that allow the sound to be heard more easily and direct the blaring sound away from the hunter(s). They are usually well worth the extra cost.

Some trainers will use a friend or “bird boys” who position themselves some distance from the trainer and toss the bumpers high into the air to simulate a falling bird. For those who train without assistance, bird launchers are a big help. These launchers come in single or multiple bird capacity; however, they are usually bulky and can be expensive.

Electric dog training collars are effective but controversial. These collars have a small electronic device attached that administers a remote controlled mild electric shock to the dog. The control is hand held by the trainer. These pieces of equipment allow an immediate correction when the dog fails to respond to the more conventional command. The level of shock involved has been compared to the static shock one receives from a carpet or from touching a car door handle in cold weather. Actually, the electric collar could be considered a humane alternative to the aggressive tactics or brute force used by some trainers.

One of the best ways to embark on training your hunting dog is learn from the experts. Training tips and guidelines are now available on tapes that show the student step by step training procedures. These instructional tapes should be on every novice trainer’s list of essential training equipment.

When you’re training your dog in the wilds you should be prepared to care for him if he is injured. Therefore, the final thing on our list of essentials is a First Aid Kit. Many of the items you’ll need for your dog are also appropriate for use on humans, so the kit can be mutually beneficial to both you and your dog. Fill the kit with such items as: sterile bandages, topical solutions, tape, scissors, tweezers, antibiotic ointments such as Neosporin, ibuprofen (safe for both humans and canines) and possibly a veterinarian prescribed anti-inflammatory such as Deramaxx or Rimadly. A well stocked First Aid Kit has prevented many a pleasant hunting trip from becoming a nightmare.

Get Some Dog Training Help Here

Dogs can sometimes take over in a home when they are not trained well. People inadvertently make their pets the ruler of the house because they are not sure how to train them to be good pets. This is a bad situation for both the dog and the owner. They need dog training help to become good owners.

One suggestion is to get dog training help from an actual trainer or someone who has done it before. Mentors can help point out mistakes when taking care of or training a dog. Different breeds need different kinds of care so it essential to read up on the particular breed for obedience training dogs to be sure what it needs.

Some dogs are frightful and some are aggressive. Some are aggressive because they are frightened. It is very important to understand what the dog means when it barks or makes aggressive moves. Barking is a good indicator that the dog is aware of something, either someone at the door, they need to be let out or they are hungry.

Dogs can give owners an idea what they want if the owner is in tune with the dogs needs. Treating a dog as a toy or as a human are both incorrect methods. Neither of these methods will train a dog. Dogs become confused when owners treat them in odd ways, even if it is not physical violence. Most do not understand why they are being dressed up in strange material.

Punishing a dog when it is already frightened is not a good method for training. Dogs, similar to children, need direction and discipline. Discipline is not punishment. Discipline is teaching. Nearly every dog can be taught the basic tasks of sit, stay and speak just by using the proper technique and a bit of a snack.

Becoming aware of what makes a dog anxious or frightened is one of the first steps to training it right. Dogs should never be teased in a harmful or aggressive way because this kind of action signifies to their instincts that they need to fight back. Some people find dog clicker training useful.

If a dog is particularly troubled and finding dog training help does not work, an obedience school might do the trick. Most of them are smart enough to learn many different tricks. The key is to work with the dog and its particular personality and breed. They need to be treated with respect but taught the ownership/pet relationship. They need to be fully aware that they are not the dominant of the species. Once dominance is asserted, owners should have much less trouble training it.

Here’s The Scoop On Dog Clicker Training

Dog training is a necessity when you make the decision to keep a dog as a pet.Dogs, particularly larger ones, must be obedient, or keeping them becomes extremely hard work.

In addition to their appreciation for being fed, as pack animals dogs have natural instincts that favour training. These instincts are manifested as a desire to please a trainer. This gives the dog trainer an unbeatable edge in shaping the dog’s behaviour.

While dogs can be trained for complicated, serious actions, such as rescue work, circus acts, or medical diagnosis, there are certain elements of training that almost all dogs can learn, to the benefit of both dog and trainer.

Basically, dog training is about communication. The trainer is communicating to the dog what behaviours are correct in what circumstances. A successful trainer must also understand the communication that the dog sends to the them. The dog can signal that he is unsure, confused, nervous, happy, excited, etc. The emotional state of the dog is an important consideration in directing the training.

Dog training clickers are great training tools. They are effective training tools for puppies or dogs because dog clickers make a very distinct sound, letting you control your timing, and eliminate the inflection in your voice that can hinder dog training.

Dogs are very sensitive to inflections in your voice, and training your dog with a clicker eliminates the inflections and you can train more effectively, even if you are in a crabby mood or are getting short-tempered during the training session.

Now that you’ve got a dog clicker it is time to train your dog to get used to the tool. First thing, get a pocket full of small, edible treats ready and, for easy access, get a nice clicker treat bag. Then you can lure the dog with the treat or go to the dog with the clicker and some treats.

Click the clicker, and give the dog a nice treat. At this point, it doesn’t matter what he’s doing at the moment, since you basically are training your dog to learn that when there’s a click there’s a treat. You can continue the process of making clicks and rewarding with treats until you’ve trained your dog to react quickly with the turn of his head and he gives you all his attention when he hears the sound of the clicker. This process probably won’t really take much time, but you’ve got to make him react with your clicker before you move on to the next clicker training step.

Whatever stage of training you have reached,or whatever method of training you may have chosen, always remember these golden rules;

1. Be Positive – It is necessary to use positive reinforcement when you train your dog or puppy by offering some dog treats and a lot of praise if he does something correctly. During the initial training sessions you can offer both praise and treats.

2. Firm and Friendly – When you give commands such as stay and come, you want to use a happy, friendly voice. On the other hand, you will want a lower, firmer voice for sit, down, and stay.

3. Start Young…but not too early - The ideal time to start training begins at six to eight weeks, maybe even earlier depending on the puppy. But remember, you can teach old dogs new tricks.

4. Be Patient – Patience is vital when you work with your dog or puppy. If you feel like you’re at the end of your rope before you’ve even started, don’t attempt to train your dog. Your dog is incredibly smart and will pick up on your emotions.

5. Keep it Short - Fifteen minutes or so is about the right time for learning simple commands, so consentrate on a single command a session and end it on a positive note. If your dog or pup has successfully done the command several times in a row remember to smother him with praise. After the dog training session, spend some time playing. He will associate time with you as positive and look forward to his training.

6. No Distractions - Try to pick a quiet place free of distractions when training your dog. A secluded garden or a quiet inside room works best. If there are other pets in the family, put them separate so they won’t interfere with training.

7. Remember, both you and the dog should enjoy. – Dog training, of course, should be a pleasant time for you and your dog. The time can be used to bond closely with your dog and learn each other’s personalities. When you do this, you will not only have a well-trained dog or puppy, but a longtime, loyal companion and friend.
